Rich Greenfield at Amagi FAST LA: 'Legacy Media, You've Got No Signal!'

All posts

“It is literally meant to be a TikTok feed of Bravo.” Another brilliant set of insights by Rich Greenfield at the Amagi FAST conference last week!

Legacy Media Has No Signal

Rich opened the show with a fun anecote. For those of you that know him from Twitter years ago, he created the hashtag #GoodLuckTV and rode that to fame.

Today, as he tells it, the question people are asking him is this:

Is it time for #GoodLuckStreaming?

To which, he goes into depth on a number of points I’ll write about later in the week.

But here’s his first:

Dear legacy media companies, here’s your biggest problem.

You’ve got no signal! And we all know - signal is what TikTok / vertical videos have … in spades.

Guess what Bravoverse is?

You got it. A verticalized awesomeness tab inside of the Peacock mobile app. See pic below courtesy of NBC Universal.

And now, an image below of the usage of vertical video for news consumption across the four biggest platforms. (Courtesy of Ring Digital’s FALL 2026 #FutureOfTV.Live survey, where I continued my coverage of vertical media from my SPRING 2026 Report.)

Here’re is a great quote from Rich.

“We’re moving into a world where it is pretty apparent that vertical video is not going away. I’m sure half this audience is probably staring at TikTok as we speak. I’m not entertaining them enough. And so, you know, the reality is, vertical video is not going away.

I think back to the comment Bob Iger made, this is probably like two years ago. He made a comment that he recognized, the first time he really admitted that Disney didn’t do a good job with their algorithm. Their homepage recommendations was subpar and they really need to improve.

And I kept thinking to myself, it’s nice to understand you have a problem. That is certainly the first, that’s a very, very important first step. The challenge is, you can’t really fix it. That’s the part I wanted to sort of respond to him with, is like you can’t fix it with what you’re doing because, you know, when Disney comes out with Andor, everyone watches Andor.

If everyone in this room is watching the same show for 30 minutes or an hour, you don’t get a lot of signal. The beauty of, you know, of TikTok, the beauty of YouTube, the beauty of Instagram Reels, the reason these are such huge businesses, right, Is you’re getting so much signal. What you hover on, what you click through, they learn that, they’re constantly learning it. You’re getting so much algorithmic data, not to mention, you know, having 40,000,000 people who watch for, I don’t know, you know, a very limited amount of time per week. And so my point is, if you really want to have a good targeted algorithm, this sort of goes back to what we were saying in the earlier conversation.

What all of these services struggle with is they have libraries, but no one’s actually watching them, because they don’t have the algorithms, they don’t have the data to actually understand enough about the user base.

So they have to get more signal to better understand their user so that they can target better. … you go onto Instagram or you go onto TikTok and it’s like, oh my god, how did they know that I want to see that? It’s night and day.

If you haven’t tried Bravoverse on Peacock and whether or not Bravoverse works or not, I’m not a cheerleader, the Bravo person.

But I’m interested in that they’ve created something that lives on mobile. That is short form, leverages their deep catalog, sitting there, it’s in beta right now.

It is literally meant to be a TikTok feed of Bravo.

So if you’re a Bravo fan, it is like a world of TikTok, but it’s all Bravo content.
